The NSW department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency have announced the opening of the new Local Government Energy Efficiency Program to help local councils to install solar or heat pump hot water systems in community facilities.

The government has opened the Local Government Energy Efficiency Program (LGEEP) for applications. The $24 million program will support local governing authorities install energy efficient solar and heat pump hot water systems in their buildings and community facilities, particularly where those authorities are situated in low socio-economic or otherwise disadvantaged areas.

Eligibility

All local governing authorities across Australia will be eligible for a maximum grant amount according to their size.

Additional funding will be available to local governing authorities based on their socio-economic status.

Local governing authorities will be required to:

  • Obtain and provide three or more quotes from different installers and manufactures
  • Install systems on owned or long term lease buildings (5 or more years remaining)
  • Install systems which attract 10 or more Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) at the time of installation
  • Co-fund the projects
  • Install systems within 12 months of signing funding agreement.

The program is open for applications until 29 April 2013. Approved projects must be completed within 12 months.
